Fremont Cannon painted Rebel red at UNLV

LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

It's been absent for the past eight years, but the Fremont Cannon is back at UNLV following the Rebels' 27-22 victory over UNR on Saturday.

The prize for the rivalry game was paraded around campus Monday before being sent off for a red paint job.

"It's really exciting. It's about dang time, obviously. We kind of felt like we probably played well enough to get it a year ago and didn't find a way to do that, so we've had to sit on that for 365 days as a unit," UNLV football head coach Bobby Hauck said.

The cannon is now being given a makeover, going from Wolf Pack blue to Rebel red.

"The goal is to keep it red forever, but you don't know whether that's going to happen or not. You get to play every year to see," Hauck said. "It's one of the beauties of a rival game, and having something tangible to take with you if you do win it."

"It definitely felt incredible. I've personally been here five years and have been chasing after it, and to finally get it, it's a big weight lifted off our shoulders," said UNLV's Caleb Herring, who passed for 335 yards and three touchdowns Saturday.
