LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

Witnesses said a man may have been driving recklessly when his sport-utility vehicle slammed into a northwest Las Vegas light pole, killing him.

Las Vegas Metro police reported the single-vehicle accident just before 10:45 p.m. Wednesday on North Buffalo Drive, just south of West Cielo Vista Avenue.

According to police, a 1994 GMC Suburban was traveling north on Buffalo when it crossed over the center median and traveled across southbound lanes.

The vehicle drove off the roadway and slammed into the light pole head-on, police said. Citing witnesses, police said the vehicle burst into flames on impact. Witnesses also said they saw the vehicle driving recklessly just before the crash.

The 23-year-old driver died at the scene. The Clark County Coroner's Office identified the driver as Brett Stockmaik of Las Vegas. He died of blunt force trauma and burns, and the manner was ruled an accident.

Buffalo was shut down for a few hours after the wreck.

The incident marked the 81st traffic-related fatality in Metro's jurisdiction.
