PHOENIX (CBS5) -

One person was killed and another hospitalized after a two-vehicle collision that shut down the intersection of 47th Avenue and Van Buren Street early Monday morning.

Witnesses told police that a passenger car going south on 47th Avenue failed to yield to a westbound minivan on Van Buren and collided in the intersection about 5:30 a.m., said Phoenix police Sgt. Trent Crump.

The minivan stuck the car broadside, killing the car's driver. The driver of the minivan was taken to a Phoenix hospital in serious condition, Crump said.

Impairment did not appear to be a factor, Crump said.

Crump said the identity of the car's driver was being withheld, pending notification of relatives.

No other passengers were involved, he said.

Crump said that Van Buren between 43 and 51st avenues was restricted, and officers were allowing on business owners and workers through. He estimated the road would be closed through the morning rush hour.

No other information was immediately available.
