Appeals court won't lift higher campaign limit ban

Posted: Updated:

The Arizona Court of Appeals won't lift an injunction it issued blocking higher campaign contribution limits passed by the Legislature and signed into law by Gov. Jan Brewer.

The court on Friday left in place a preliminary injunction against the increased limits in House Bill 2593 it issued this week. The order explained that voters put the limits in place in 1998 and that pre-empts efforts by the Legislature to lift them without voter approval.

The Arizona Citizens Clean Elections Commission sued to block the law in July. A Maricopa County Superior Court judge ruled for the Legislature last month but was reversed by the appeals court.

Republicans called the existing limits too low and pushed the law raising the limits by up to 10 times the current level.
