The University of Iowa is ready to celebrate Las Vegas casino mogul Steve Wynn for donating $25 million to research aimed at preventing and curing blindness.
Wynn is expected to join university leaders in Iowa City on Friday afternoon for an event commemorating the naming of the new Stephen A. Wynn Institute for Vision Research.
The university announced the gift from the billionaire chairman of Wynn Resorts in August.
Scientists say the funding will accelerate their search for breakthroughs in genetic testing for eye disease and gene and stem cell therapies that could one day restore vision. The institute is expected to hire more employees and expand its lab space.
Wynn has retinitis pigmentosa, a disease that causes night blindness and weakness in peripheral vision.
