LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

Las Vegas Metro police recognized one of their own officers who helped a woman give birth at an apartment complex parking lot.

Metro said Officer Jesus Jimenez was the first to respond to a woman in labor in the 5200 block of East Charleston Boulevard on Tuesday morning.

Police said Jimenez found the mother-to-be in the back seat of a vehicle in the parking lot. Before paramedics arrived, Jimenez delivered the woman's baby girl, unwrapped the umbilical cord from the baby's neck and enabled the child to breathe, police said.

The mother and child were rushed by medical personnel to Sunrise Hospital.

Jimenez is assigned to the Northeast Area Command.
