FLORENCE, AZ (CBS5) -

A 20-year-old man has pleaded not guilty in the death of his 19-year-old girlfriend in an incident that was first called a tragic "prank."

Police said Ramiro Delcid, 20, was arraigned Friday on one count of second-degree murder with extreme indifference.

According to deputies, Delcid shot 19-year-old Dina Dicochea while the two were sitting in his company truck at Red Rock Feed Company on Oct. 14.

Delcid told investigators that he thought he had taken all of the bullets out of his revolver when he aimed the gun at his girlfriend and pulled the trigger. Delcid admitted to detectives he was trying to scare her.

A pretrial conference hearing has been scheduled for Nov. 25.

"We must hold life sacred and, when an innocent life is suddenly taken, victims' families and friends deserve answers and justice," Pinal County Attorney Lando Voyles said in a statement.

Reyna Soqui lives two doors down from Delcid.

"I'm sure it was an accident because he wouldn't do something like that. I have known Ramiro my whole life. He's been a great guy," said Soqui.

Soqui said Dicochea recently moved to Red Rock from Tucson and that the couple lived together. Although she never talked much with Delcid's girlfriend, she said the two seemed happy together.

"I know he loved her. They were doing good together," said Soqui.

Delcid's boss said he was a good young man and that had no idea he was carrying a gun.
