A Las Vegas man was arrested Monday in Arizona, accused of fatally shooting a land caretaker.

According to the Mohave County Sheriff's office, 35-year-old Jose Isabel Licea-Mendoza was detained after deputies were responded to a reported shooting at a plot of land in the town of Dolan Springs. There, deputies found a freshly dug up area with a man's body, the sheriff's office said.

Investigators believed the body belonged to the caretaker of the property.

Citing witnesses, the sheriff's office said the caretaker was last seen alive with relatives of the land's owner and the suspect, Licea-Mendoza, just two days before. Authorities noted the suspect's sister is married to the owner's brother.

Investigators believed the caretaker was shot on the property and that the suspect confessed to his brother-in-law about the shooting. The suspect left Arizona along with family members to Nevada, but later returned to Dolan Springs. The sheriff's office said that was when a family member contacted the land owner about the shooting.

The suspect denied involvement in the apparent slaying, but deputies were able to locate a handgun, the sheriff's office said. Licea-Medoza was booked into Mohave County Jail.

Authorities did not immediately release the victim's name.
