TEMPE, AZ (CBS5) -

Arizona State University is proposing to freeze tuition for undergraduates for the next academic year.

The proposal applies to current students and those entering in the fall of 2014.

ASU said in a statement that it hasn't decided whether the freeze will also apply for out-of-state students or graduate students, whether in-state or out-of-state.

"Our commitment to the people of Arizona is to use innovation and operational efficiency to make access to such an education available to all who are able and willing to do the work," said ASU President Michael Crow.

ASU will deliver a formal proposal to the Arizona Board of Regents in the spring.

The university said it is making the announcement early "in order to give Arizona undergraduate students and their families as much planning time as possible."
