PHOENIX (CBS5) -

A central Arizona food bank is coming to the rescue of more than 2,200 furloughed workers at Grand Canyon National Park.

On Tuesday, a truck will leave from St. Mary's Food Bank in Phoenix stocked with more than 600 emergency food boxes. The supplies are earmarked for the park workers and an additional 1,200 hospitality employees of businesses surrounding the national park.

"We understand the urgency of the problem in the Grand Canyon community and will respond as quickly as possible to assist families," St. Mary's President and CEO Beverly Damore said.

The first stop will be at the Tusayan Fire Station, before traveling into the closed park to drop off food at the Maswick Lodge Cafeteria for distribution on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The drop-off will be followed by a mobile pantry distribution on Friday, Oct. 11 that is also open to all Grand Canyon and Tusyan employees.

The weekly distributions will continue throughout the duration of the government shutdown.

"While local concessionaires are supporting their furloughed employees and their families by providing free rent and limited meal support, we anticipated a great need for food relief outside of our ability to sustain through local food donations," said Rev. Patrick Dotson, pastor of Grand Canyon Community Church who normally runs a small food distribution out of his home.

This distribution comes at a time when St. Mary's is experiencing shortages in both canned (non-perishable food) to stock these boxes. Volunteers are needed to help pack emergency food with the holiday season quickly approaching.
