LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

It's a big weekend for downtown with the Las Vegas Bike Fest rolling into town, and thousands came out for First Friday festivities.

Fremont Street is expecting plenty of tourists and locals for a weekend of fun, food and drink, but Metro police are taking a tough stance.

Starting on Friday, police and security guards are checking IDs. Those under 21 are not allowed on Fremont Street after 9 p.m. after the Las Vegas City Council passed a curfew earlier this week.

Barriers have been put up, blocking off portions of Main Street and Fremont.

"We feel that Fremont Street is mainly an adult venue. You have to be 21 to gamble, you have to be 21 to drink, and especially at night, we don't think it's a place teenagers should be hanging out," said Tom Bruny, Fremont Street Experience's executive director.

"This is a drinking atmosphere – drinking and gambling and smoking. This is for adults, not children," said tourist John Tenuta.

Officers are also checking backpacks for glass bottles and package liquor, tuning down anyone who tries to bring it in.

"You're going to see officers out here. Public safety is our concern, and we want you to come out and have a great time and do it responsibly," said Metro's Jose Hernandez.

About 100 police officers patrolled around Fremont Street Friday night. Those under 18 must be accompanied by an adult to be in the area restricted by curfew past 9 p.m.
