16-year-old charged with murder in shooting case

The teen detained along with a 19-year-old following a slain Las Vegas woman's shooting has been charged with murder.

Jail records showed Fabian Diaz, 16, was charged with murder with a deadly weapon, conspiracy to commit murder, attempted robbery with a deadly weapon and conspiracy to commit robbery.

According to police documents, Diaz was arrested on Sept. 28 in the same neighborhood where officers responded to the shooting of 71-year-old Dixie Jones in the area of H Street and Monroe Avenue. Diaz's passenger William Copeland, 19, was also arrested.

Police said Diaz's vehicle was stopped after officer saw it with the headlights turned off.

Copeland admitted to police he attempted to rob Jones at gunpoint and claimed the woman said she had a weapon, as well. In the documents, Copeland said he opened fire twice at Jones, hitting her once.

According to documents, Diaz supported Copeland's story about shooting Jones, also claiming the woman was armed.

Police learned the vehicle Diaz was driving belongs to his mother, documents showed.

Jones was rushed to University Medical Center, where she later was pronounced dead,

Copeland was also charged with murder, attempted robbery and conspiracy to commit robbery.
