Downtown business owners happy with weekend curfew

LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

The city of Las Vegas on Wednesday approved a new curfew which mandates those under 18 be off the streets of downtown Las Vegas by 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday night.

Those who own businesses along Fremont Street, which largely cater to an adult crowd, believe the curfew will help business rather than hurt it.

"I definitely think them having the curfew in place only helps us out," said Elias Ghanem, who owns Radio City Pizza.

Ghanem has owned the pizza parlor for six months.

"After a certain time, I don't feel it's appropriate for minors to be down here because it is a drinking environment any time after 9 p.m., and it's more adult oriented anyway," Ghanem said.

Ghanem said that although he hasn't had any specific problems with teens, he'd prefer his business be filled with adults at night.

"We want people to come in and not necessarily see a table of kids after 9 p.m., especially if they're coming here and having beers or drinks," he said.

Christopher LaPorte supports the new curfew as well. His business, Insert Coin(s), is 21 and up. Still, he thinks the new ordinance will help keep kids from his video game-themed bar and others.

"It might not be suitable for kids to be here. It's just one more thing the city is trying to do in terms of making it easier for Metro [police] and business owners to control the area and make it more appealing for those who do want to come here," he said.

Las Vegan Crystal Mendoza brings her children to Fremont Street for the kid-friendly attractions that are available. She said she's shocked by how many teens she sees in the area unaccompanied by a parent.

"I don't think it's safe, and who knows what they can get into, especially down here," she said.

Teens are permitted to be in the area past 9 p.m. with a parent or guardian. The curfew was approved by a 6-0 vote. Las Vegas Councilman Steve Ross was not present for the vote.
