The teen accused of shooting and killing a 71-year-old woman during a holdup appeared in Las Vegas Justice Court Tuesday.

William Copeland, 19, was charged with counts of murder with a deadly weapon, attempted robbery of a victim over 60 years old and conspiracy to commit robbery.

During his initial 72-hour hearing, Copeland had his next court date set for Nov. 4.

According to Las Vegas Metro police, Copeland was arrested on Saturday night shortly after officers found a woman shot in the stomach in the area of H Street and Monroe Avenue.

In police documents, the victim, who was identified as Dixie Jones, told officers she was walking in the neighborhood when a person with a handgun demanded for her purse. After she refused, the person opened fire twice at the woman, hitting her once, according to police.

Jones was rushed to University Medical Center, where she later was pronounced dead.

Officers patrolling the area near the shooting scene arrested Copeland and a 16-year-old after the car they were in was seen without headlights on, police said.

According to police documents, Copeland admitted to holding up Jones for "quick money" and opening fire, claiming the woman had a weapon as well.

Copeland was being held into the Clark County Detention Center.
