HENDERSON, NV (FOX5) -
The teenage suspect in the deaths of his mother and brother was arrested Wednesday morning on the Las Vegas Strip, according to police.
Adrian Navarro-Canales, 16, was named a suspect in the stabbing deaths of his mother, 40-year-old Elvira Canales-Gomez, and his brother, 9-year-old Cesar Navarro, after their bodies were discovered in a Henderson apartment Friday.
Keith Paul, spokesman for the Henderson Police Department, said that someone called authorities after they saw Navarro-Canales at a food court near the intersection of Las Vegas Boulevard and Tropicana Avenue. He said police went to the food court Wednesday morning and found the teen sitting in the food court and arrested him.
FOX5 spoke with a Dairy Queen employee at the food court who didn't wish to be identified. She recalled seeing Navarro-Canales sitting for hours inside the Showcase Food Court.
"He was sitting on his phone. He had, like, no emotion. I kind of felt like I wanted to ask him if he was hungry," she said. "They showed me a picture of him, and that's when it dawned on me that he was sitting right here."
The teen was not originally considered a suspect in the deaths, and was listed as missing after the discovery of his slain family members. A few days after the discovery, warrants were issued for the teen's arrest.
Paul said that detectives believe Navarro-Canales left the apartment on Wednesday, when investigators believe the woman and her son were killed, and walked to the Las Vegas Strip. He said there is now no evidence that he returned to the apartment after the bodies were found.
"He walked from his apartment to the Strip, and we believe that for the rest of the time he was in that same area," Paul said.
Navarro-Canales was charged with two counts of murder. He was being held in the Clark County Detention Center.
