Las Vegas is a destination city, but unlike New York or San Francisco, we enjoy ample parking.

Now, there is a movement aimed at informing people that all the empty parking spaces can be useful to the community.

The concept of World Park(ing) Day is simple. You take an empty parking space and transform it into something useful such as a park.

Some participants in downtown Las Vegas on Friday turned a space into a party living room.

"We've got lamps here. We've got furniture that's more like couches than park benches," one participant said.

The parking space transformations drew more than a few curious looks from passersby.

"They'll look back once or twice to make sure they saw what they really just saw," said participant and UNLV student Enrique Tanoco.

World Park(ing) Day began in 2005.

"There's not enough public space in downtown Las Vegas, and if I can convince a handful of people that a small public space changes their day, helps them feel better downtown, I've accomplished my goal," said Jude Stanion with the Downtown Project.

Six Las Vegas groups participated this year.

UNLV's Downtown Design Center took the corner of 6th and Fremont streets, constructing a curved platform from sustainable materials.

"This is actually built out of plywood that's digitally fabricated, and we reused plywood," said Ken McCown with UNLV Downtown Design Center.

What better use for a space than a party? That's what people with Epyk Entertainment opted for.

"It's a stage, a bar, a lounge, all condensed into a parking space," said Steve MacWithey with Epyk Entertainment.

Some of the spaces were made functional. MSA Hospice used a spot on 4th Street to offer passersby free blood pressure screenings.
