LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

Las Vegas-based Allegiant Air delayed or canceled more than a dozen flights Friday because of inspections regarding emergency slides on a number of its aircraft.

The airline said the system-wide flight delays affect the company's MD80 aircraft.

According to Allegiant, 18 of 121 scheduled flights were not expected to be completed on Friday. Sixteen of those flights will operate on Saturday, but two flights between Oakland and Reno will be canceled.

The airline added 20 flights will be significantly delayed. About 32 MD80s were left out of service as a result of the inspections, Allegiant said in a news release.

"Allegiant is committed, above all else, to the safety of our passengers and crew, and we are dedicated to working around-the-clock to correct the issue," a company Facebook post read. "We apologize for the disruption in travel plans."

According to McCarran International Airport's website, three arriving Allegiant flights were delayed by at least four hours and one was canceled. The same website reported eight departing flights for the airline were delayed by at least four hours, and four were canceled.

Allegiant said the company's maintenance crew became aware of a discrepancy in a slide maintenance schedule. The company discovered many of its slides had not been inspected within the last year, putting the planes in non-compliance with a newly required yearly check for slides older than 15 years.

The airline began removing planes from service until all of the slides were brought into compliance. Allegiant said it expects to complete the process by the end of September, although the airline did not give a timetable on how long the flight disruptions will last.

The company said it had activated additional call center staff, and that travelers impacted by the delays and cancellations will be contacted. Allegiant recommended passengers check their flight's status at allegiantair.com or call 702-505-8888.

The airline also said voucher and refund compensation will be offered depending on the length of delays or whether the flight was rescheduled. Hotel accommodations and meals will be provided to overnight passengers.

Those whose flights are delayed less than four hours will receive a $100 voucher for future travel. Those whose flights are delayed for between four and six hours will receive a $150 voucher. Passengers whose flights are delayed six hours or more will receive a $200 voucher. If your flight is rescheduled, you will receive a full refund and voucher for $200.
