LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

A one-time member of a program aimed at giving police experience to teens was identified as the motorcyclist killed in a crash on Thursday.

A spokesperson with Las Vegas Metro police confirmed Jonathon Matthew Ramirez, 21, was the person who died in the incident that happened on Tropicana Avenue and Edmond Street.

The spokesperson said Ramirez served as an Explorer with the police department. The Explorers program, as described by Metro, exposes young men and women to hands-on police experience.

According to police, the wreck Ramirez was involved happened just before midnight on Thursday.

According to Metro Sgt. Richard Strader, the motorcyclist was traveling eastbound on Tropicana when a westbound vehicle was turning onto southbound Edmond.

The motorcycle tried to stop and avoid the car but struck the front right panel of the vehicle, police said.

Officers believed speed was a factor into the crash. The driver of the car was not seriously hurt.

A similar incident also killed former Explorer Angel Velasquez in August. Police said Velasquez was riding a motorcycle on E. Sahara Avenue when he was struck by a hit-and-run driver.

Velasquez' mentor and family said the 19-year-old was studying criminal justice at College of Southern Nevada, with his goal to join the police department.

A friend of Ramirez' family said a candlelight vigil will take place Friday at Charlie Frias Park at 4801 S. Decatur Blvd. at 8:30 p.m. Ramirez is survived by one child with another on the way.

As of this incident, this marked the 68th auto-related fatality in Metro's jurisdiction.
