PHOENIX (CBS5) -

The West Valley became more mobile over the weekend.

The Arizona Department of Transportation opened three new southbound lanes along Loop 303 between Glendale and Peoria avenues over the weekend, according to an ADOT news release.

One northbound lane was also opened while work is completed over the next couple weekends to add rubberized asphalt north to Bell Road, according to the release.

There will still be northbound closures between Cactus and Bell roads for the paving work. Once that is completed, all three northbound lanes are expected to be opened, according to the release.

Completion on the $65 million Loop 303 project between Glendale and Peoria avenues is expected later in the fall and will include direct ramp connections to and from Northern Parkway, which runs east-west, according to ADOT.

The overall project will expand Loop 303 from a two-lane highway to a six-lane freeway between Interstate 10 and Grand Avenue.

Funding for all the Loop 303 projects between I-10 and Grand Avenue comes from the Maricopa Association of Government's Regional Transportation Plan, approved by voters in 2004.
