Out-of-control SUV slams into Phoenix home

Posted: Updated:

Anya Chapman had enough of her kid's horseplay Sunday afternoon, so she told them to leave living room and sent them to their bedrooms. A few minutes later, a SUV came crashing through the front of the home.

"It was like boom, boom, BOOM," said Chapman.

Police said the driver was traveling westbound on Indian School Road near 42nd Avenue when he veered off the street, hit a fire hydrant, took out a fence and slammed into the house.

"We walked out and I looked and I was like, 'Wow.' It was smoke and dust, and everything that was on the wall had been pushed to the other side of the room," said Chapman.

Cinder blocks were left dangling from the ceiling. The front wall had been reduced to a pile of rubble. In the midst of all the debris stood a stranger.

"At first, I thought he was going to run because he jumped out of his car real quick. Then he come out and he's like, 'Sorry,'" said Chapman.

Chapman doesn't know where her family is going to sleep, but is thankful her husband and kids are all OK.

"Pretty lucky. I count my blessing, that's for sure," said Chapman.

Police charged the driver with failure to control his vehicle.

Neighbors said that was the second time that particular house has been hit by a car.
