Police in Mesquite say a woman was running an elaborate and lucrative scam, claiming her son had cancer.

Detectives, following a lengthy investigation, arrested Shawnanna Starr Flores, 36, on Friday evening.

Police believe Flores falsely represented her 7-year-old son as having a rare malignant liver cancer known as hepatoblastoma.

A benefit car wash for the child was held at a Mesquite gas station on Aug. 24, which raised $404. A fund for the child was established at Wells Fargo bank and money jars were placed in businesses around the city.

Flores was charged with felony fraud, obtaining money under false pretenses, felony child abuse and felony theft.

Child Protective Services is investigating the case as well.

If you have additional information on this case or donated to the Rodrigo Cancer Fund, you are asked to contact Mesquite Det. Ron Richmond at 702-346-5262, ext. 6032.
