LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

Police said a mother involved in a 23-hour standoff and officer-involved shooting was pointing a gun at one of her sons when police shot her.

At a press briefing Wednesday afternoon, Metro police released details on the incident, which happened Aug. 28 at a home near the intersection of Tropicana Avenue and Mountain Vista Street.

Police said they were called after Sarah Jones barricaded herself and two of her sons in her home on Aug. 27. They said she had a handgun and was threatening to shoot one of her children.

After hours of negotiations with SWAT officers, police entered the home when they heard a shot from Jones' bedroom.

Jones was pointing the gun at one of her sons and an officer fired a shot that hit her in the right side of her head, according to Metro.

The children made it out of the home unharmed.

Jones, who as of Wednesday is still in the hospital, faces several charges, including attempted murder, kidnapping and child endangerment.

Two police officers were injured during the incident. Both are expected to fully recover and return to work following an internal investigation.
