Springfield firefighters respond to fire at Chestnut Junior High School

Posted: Updated:
SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

More than 30 Springfield firefighters responded to a fire at Chestnut Junior High school early Tuesday that is now being investigated as a possible arson.

Officials say firefighters spotted heavy smoke and fire coming from the former high school at 495 Chestnut St. when they arrived on the scene.

According to officials, firefighters were not able to get to the fire from inside of the building because of its large size and poor conditions. So, they were forced to fight the fire from the outside of the building.

While fighting to put out the fire, one firefighter fell into an open sewer hole. Officials said he has been released from the hospital with minor injuries.

Officials said nearly city-block-long property is now heavily damaged by fire, smoke and water and repair remains uncertain.

The arson unit is currently on the scene investigating the cause of this.
