Police: Have fun Labor Day weekend but stay safe

LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

Tourists have already started the long weekend early, hitting up the Las Vegas Strip before the official Labor Day weekend begins.

"I've never been," said one tourist from Maryland. "I came to gamble sight-see."

While tourists and locals are planning their holiday festivities, law enforcement is gearing up for DUI checkpoints.

"Labor day is definitely our volume here. Our population here in Las Vegas balloons because all the tourists come in," said Trooper Jeremie Elliott, Nevada Highway Patrol Southern Command public information officer.

NHP, along with other local law enforcement, are teaming up to remind citizens and out-of-towners to be responsible.

"Please have a plan in place. Have a designated driver. Have that taxi ride scheduled. Plan on staying where you're having your festivities," Elliott said.

The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority anticipates 308,000 tourists this Labor Day weekend, an increase from last year.

Dawn Christensen, LVCVA spokeswoman, said she is excited about the busy weekend. She said they work closely with law enforcement whenever high volumes of people are visiting Las Vegas.

"We work very closely with Metro and our resort partners to make sure that we maintain a safe and secure environment for our guests and for our residents," Christensen said.

Mackesha Lee and her children visit Las Vegas often. "I come to Vegas a lot, and I've never had any problems, and we come together as a family," Lee said.

As an avid visitor, Lee said she always has a plan, and for her and her children, it's traveling in groups.

"We just travel all together in groups so we just try to stay on the main strip close to the businesses," Lee said.

Meanwhile, Elliott said the checkpoints will likely be in high volume areas of town but should not jeopardize traffic.
