PHOENIX (CBS5) -

Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer is calling on Arizonans to commemorate the anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream" address by ringing bells at noon Wednesday.

Brewer joined others in noting that 50 years ago King stood on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial and delivered one of the most influential and memorable speeches in American history.

She urged residents to take time "to revisit and reflect on his message."

In a statement, Brewer said, "Dr. King stirred the country with his vision for a brighter future. The principles he so eloquently preached from those steps in 1963 are no less significant today. Let us carry on the legacy of that speech - and of Dr. King himself."

"Fifty years ago today, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered one of the most powerful and significant speeches in the history of our nation. From the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in our nation's capital, he stirred and inspired the hearts of Americans with his 'I Have a Dream' speech. Today we honor his amazing legacy and strive to live out the principles he championed," said Arizona Rep. Matt Salmon.

On Wednesday, President Barack Obama will speak from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. He will be joined by former presidents Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter.

Churches and groups nationwide have been asked to ring bells at 3 p.m. Eastern time Wednesday, marking the exact time King spoke.
