LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

After nearly 24 hours, a standoff in east Las Vegas between police and a mother who they described as armed ended with an officer-involved shooting.

Police said they were called to the home near the intersection of Tropicana Avenue and Mountain Vista Street just after midnight Tuesday because of a domestic disturbance.

Police spokesman Sgt. John Sheahan said that when officers arrived, a man and a 10-year-old boy exited the home, but a woman would not come outside. He said negotiators talked with the woman for most of the day.

As the standoff continued, police said they believed the woman, who they described as unstable, was armed with a gun and was holed up inside the home with two children, ages 2 and 3.

Just before 10 p.m., police said they heard gunfire inside the home and stormed the home. They said that the woman took one of her children into a bathroom and tried to hide from police. They said that the woman then shot through the door, wounding an officer in the leg.

"As the door was opened, the officers returned fire one time, striking the woman in the head and it exited through her mouth," Sheahan said. "She is expected to survive."

The children were not injured in the ordeal, but they were taken to Sunrise Hospital to be evaluated, police said.

According to police, the children were placed in protective custody, and the mother will face charges once she is released from the hospital.

The officer who fired the shot was placed on paid leave, which is standard policy after an officer-involved shooting.

Several hours after this standoff started, a second standoff began at a motel at the intersection of Flamingo Road and Boulder Highway. Police did not indicate that the two incidents are connected.
