LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

Looking for a prime piece of real estate in downtown Las Vegas? You might want to set your eyes on the old Clark County Courthouse.

Written bids of at least $10 million are being accepted until 9:30 a.m. Oct. 1 for the property at 200 S. Third St. in the center of downtown, according to Stacey Welling, spokeswoman for county government. The property will be auctioned off during a County Commission meeting at 10 a.m. Oct. 1.

Welling said the county has been paying $140,000 a year to maintain the 315,000-square-foot building since it was vacated in 2005 when the Regional Justice Center was opened.

Clark County Commissioner Lawrence Weekly said there has been a lot of interest in the property.

"It's in a prime location, and I am really excited about what the future holds for this property and our community," Weekly said.

Union Pacific Railroad dedicated the 2.76 acres of land to be used for a county courthouse, jail, public library and city hall in 1905. The first courthouse was a simple block structure that was opened in July 1909. In 1914, a larger, more permanent courthouse was constructed. In 1960 a new seven-story building was opened, which has stood until now.

The $10-million value was set based on an appraisal of the property last spring, Welling said.
