AZ wildfire near Yarnell nears full containment

YARNELL, AZ (AP) -

A wildfire that has burned over a square mile of brush and trees five miles east of the communities of Yarnell and Peeples Valley in north-central Arizona is nearing full containment.

Fire officials say the French Gulch Fire had burned 836 acres and was 85 percent contained after ground crews and aircraft make good progress Thursday.

Officials say 75 people were assigned to the fire as of late Thursday, down from 160.

Officials expect full containment by Friday evening.

The lightning-caused blaze started Saturday night in extremely rugged terrain without road access for ground crews.

It's in the same region of western Yavapai County as the deadly Yarnell Hill fire that killed 19 Granite Mountain Hotshots on June 30.

The fire isn't threatening any structures.
