Authorities released the name of a bicyclist who was struck and killed by a vehicle in west Las Vegas Wednesday.
The cause and manner of death for 57-year-old Edward Patrick Shelby remained pending, according to the Clark County Coroner's office Thursday.
Metro police said the man was hit at Valley View Boulevard and Sirius Avenue, near Desert Inn Road, at about at 5:30 p.m.
"Witnesses tell us the bicyclist was coming right off the curb, rolled directly into traffic, put his arm up in front of a vehicle that was rolling down Valley View," said Metro's Sgt. Richard Strader.
"The vehicle didn't have any time to stop. As a matter of fact, they struck and then applied the brakes," Strader continued.
Police said the victim was taken to UMC Trauma where he was pronounced dead.
"You know, bicyclists have to be careful on the roadway. They have to make sure that they're following the rules of the road, and you can't just jump out into traffic," said Strader.
"I say this about pedestrians, also. Don't think because you have the right of way it's all going to be OK. You want to be right, but you don't want to be dead right. Make sure the vehicle sees you. Make sure they're slowing down," said Strader.
This marks the 62nd traffic-related fatality in Metro's jurisdiction in 2013.
