LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

Police said a teenager was shot and killed at a birthday party Saturday night near Martin Luther King Boulevard and Alta Drive.

Friends and neighbors identified the victim as 17-year-old Jaylin Lewis.

Witnesses said the celebration was wrapping up when two groups of men started fighting in the backyard.

"I heard the gunshot," said Chryssa Hartsfield who attended the party. "I saw the flare of the gun. I jumped behind my friend. I looked over and saw him twitching and everybody stopped."

Hartsfield said she ran from the house after the shot was fired and police said the suspect did, too.

A person who answered the door of the home where the shooting happened said it happened in the blink of an eye.

"This is a family-oriented house," said a woman at the home who did not want to be identified. "We don't' gang-bang. We don't do all that [expletive] in the streets. None of that. What happened to that baby was heart-wrenching and very senseless. We don't know what happened. We don't know how it happened."

Police said the victim was transported to UMC Trauma where he later died.

Anyone with information about the shooting should call Crime Stoppers at 702-385-5555.

This is the 63rd homicide of the year within Metro's jurisdiction.
