LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

Thousands are expected to come to the Rio Convention Center for the Star Trek Convention this weekend.

For Trekkies from around the globe, there's no place quite like the annual convention which comes to Las Vegas every August.

Andy Strano is a local art teacher who makes his own Klingon costume each year.

"If you come to a Star Trek convention and you don't dress up, you're the odd ball out," Strano said.

Many fans come to accessorize their customs, getting the latest gadgets to make their uniforms complete.

And vendors like Kira Doroski always carry the hot sellers.

"Every year it's the starships. We're (also) doing really well with the dresses," Doroski said.

This year fans can even pay $500 to be sent into space, at least part of them.

Space Ark Enterprise LLC. is planning to launch a rocket in the next 18 months from Panama with samples of customers' DNA into space.

"We have a little kit that we send out. ... They can package it with their families (and even their pets)," Peter Poulson with Space Ark Enterprise said.

If the rocket and the DNA samples are found by other life forms, Poulson said there's a chance they might be able to clone their clients.

"If they know how to put it back together, that's good," Poulson said.

The convention is also a place for the fans to meet the stars and visa versa.

Kathy Coleman played Holly on the original Land of the Lost TV show, and she loves hearing from the fans.

"(They say) you were such a big part of my childhood. And it meant so much to me," Coleman told FOX5.

The convention runs Thursday until Sunday.
