LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

Metro Police said one in five deadly Las Vegas car crashes are caused by drunken drivers.

"I've seen them swerve, be all over the road. They're either driving fast or sometimes slow," driver Michelle Martin said.

Metro said if you see someone driving drunk on the roads, safely call 911 from a hands-free device.

Be prepared to tell the dispatcher the type of vehicle, color, driver description and license plate number.

Also let them know the street or highway they're on and where they're headed so police can anticipate their movement.

Police say to protect yourself. Don't take risks like speeding or running red lights to keep track of them. Don't take pictures or video if you're driving.

"Let the police officers know, but don't get yourself hurt and become a victim yourself," Metro Officer Larry Hadfield said.

If you plan to go out drinking, you're urged to assign a designated driver or call a cab to get home.
