LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

A teen, who aspired to join the ranks of Las Vegas Metro police, is being remembered for his dedication to the department, and his leadership.

The department's Explorer program paid tribute to 19-year-old Angel Velasquez, a day after the teen died in a motorcycle collision that also involved a hit-and-run driver.

In a release, the program said Velasquez became an Explorer at 16 years old, and excelled almost immediately. The teen scored a 98 percent, when he tested to become a captain, after three months with the program.

"He was an energizing leader," said his mentor in the program, officer Krista Bullard. "He was our go-to guy."

To exhibit the teen's hard work, the Explorer program said he went on two ride-alongs a week, as well as helping many of Metro's events, including, most recently, the funeral of fallen Search & Rescue Officer David Vanbuskirk. He did all of this while also studying criminal justice at College of Southern Nevada, the program said.

The program also mentioned his dedication to his family, in which, they said, he would give half of his paycheck, to help out with expenses.

Members of the program are planning a fundraiser, to help with his funeral expenses. A car wash was scheduled for Saturday at Brake Masters, on Windmill Lane and Eastern Avenue, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

In addition, a bank account has been set up to help Velasquez' family with funeral expenses. It is:

  • Benefit Memorial Fund for Angel Velasquez
  • Wells Fargo
  • Account #3771101486
