LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

Metro police on Thursday announced the arrest of Antwon Maurice Simmons, 31, in connection with the theft of 147 decorative brass sidewalk lights in downtown Las Vegas.

Simmons is facing charges including possession of stolen property, theft and removal of property to obtain scrap metal.

Police said Simmons was approached by a homeless man who had been in contact with investigators searching for Simmons. Simmons subsequently turned himself in.

Each of the lights is estimated to have cost $580 plus labor expenses. They were installed in the 1990s to illuminate trees along Fourth Street between Colorado and Bridger avenues.

Police believe Simmons was attempting to sell the brass pieces to various recyclers, including SA Recycling. SA Recycling employees determined that the pieces were suspicious and contacted police.

Simmons' alleged accomplice, Michael Payne, 47, was arrested on July 12.
