LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

Las Vegas Fire and Rescue said a Las Vegas family escaped a fire at their home near downtown Las Vegas Wednesday afternoon.

The blaze broke out at about 4:30 p.m. at a house on South 17th Street near St. Louis Avenue and Spencer Street.

The family said they heard a loud booming sound before flames burst out.

Firefighters arrived to find heavy flames coming out from under an awning that spanned across the front of the house as well as a van parked under a carport.

A mother and her two children, ages 10 and 12, were home when the fire broke out. Five people are displaced by the fire in all. They are being aided by the American Red Cross.

Fire investigators believe the fire started in the van and spread to the house. Because the van was destroyed, an exact cause of the fire could not be determined.

The fire did a great deal of damage to the front of the house and the attic.

Damage is estimated at $175,000. There were no injuries reported.
