LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

In less than a month, Nevada students will be back in the classroom. While families will spend an estimated average of $634.78 on back-to-school items such as clothing and supplies, that is down from $688.62 last year, according to the National Retail Federation.

According to the Retail Association of Nevada, parents are making purchases earlier than ever, with nearly 24 percent starting two months before school, 49 percent starting three weeks to a month out and just over 21 percent waiting one to two weeks before the first day.

The Retail Association of Nevada said back-to-college shoppers will spend less this year as well.

"After reaching an all-time high in 2012, back-to-school spending is expected to decline slightly this year, but it remains up 5.2 percent from two years ago," Retail Association of Nevada President Mary Lau said.

The projected spending decline is being attributed, in part, to parents having splurged last year, leaving students with items they can reuse this year.
