LAS VEGAS (FOX5/AP) -

Gov. Brian Sandoval has ordered flags to half-staff from sunrise Friday to sunset July 29 in honor of fallen Metro officer David Vanbuskirk.

Vanbuskirk, a 13-year veteran of the department who worked with Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department's Search and Rescue Unit, died Monday night during a rescue mission in the Mary Jane Falls area of Mount Charleston.

Metro Sheriff Doug Gillespie said Vanbuskirk, 36, had descended and successfully retrieved a stranded hiker prior to falling into a canyon. He said both Vanbuskirk and the hiker were in the process of being lifted to the helicopter when Vanbuskirk detached from the hoist and fell. He died on impact.

Vanbuskirk is the first officer death the department has had since 2009 and the 22nd in the sheriff's office and Las Vegas Police Department's combined history.

Metro police confirmed Vanbuskirk's funeral is set for July 29 at Central Christian Church in Henderson at noon. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. A procession down the Las Vegas Strip is planned as part of the memorial. Officials at the church said up to 2,900 people can be seated in the main auditorium.

The cause of the accident was under investigation.
