It was a nightmare scenario for a homeowner near Las Vegas Boulevard and Pebble Road Tuesday night. He arrived home to find a stranger on his sofa, clothed only in his underpants.

A standoff with SWAT ensued. It ended with the still unidentified man allegedly lunging at officers and others, leading SWAT officers to shoot the man. He later died at University Medical Center.

Prior to the break-in and standoff, the stranger showed up at a number of residences in the neighborhood.

Christian Enriquez said she had an alarming wake-up call from her mother Tuesday morning.

"My mother was eating breakfast. She started hearing something on the window. The next thing you know, she sees his face. He like peaks into the house. ... She got scared, she starts screaming," Enriquez said.

Enriquez said they called the police, who couldn't find the mystery man, but one of her neighbors did a few hours later.

"(The homeowner) went into his house and saw an Asian male adult in his living room in his underwear," said Capt. Brett Primas with LVMPD's Robbery and Homicide Bureau.

That sparked a police standoff for more than two hours, when the man would not come out of the home.

"The subject was non-responsive. He was seen numerous times through windows armed with a knife and a hammer," Primas said.

Neighbors told FOX5 the man reportedly asked the homeowner who discovered him to "kill me," and before that, he had another bizarre conversation with a different neighbor after he jumped a wall into her backyard.

"He gave her his ID and was just saying really random things, you know? ‘The government is chasing me. Can you help me? Can you help me?' That's what he kept on asking her. And she's like, 'What do you want me to help you with?' He's like, ‘You need to hide me,'" Enriquez said.

"My children, they found clothing in our backyard, and later on, we heard that the guy was in our next door neighbor's house," resident Dale Gawronik said.

"Ignoring commands from officers, he was still armed with a knife and a hammer. Two SWAT officers fired several rounds, striking the subject," Primas told reporters on the scene Tuesday night.

Police said it's still unclear if the suspect was having mental issues or was on narcotics.

Officers did say the man's ex-wife had reported him missing earlier in the day, saying he seemed to be suffering from extreme paranoia.

Even after he was shot, police said the man hit several paramedics who were trying to assist him.
