Free WiFi coming to downtown Las Vegas

In the near future, WiFi access will be widely available and free in downtown Las Vegas.

Las Vegas City Council on Wednesday approved a contract with LV.Net to allow the company to install equipment to create a network in downtown's open areas.

The first zone slated for WiFi is bordered by Grand Central Parkway, Bonanza Avenue, 8th Street and Charleston Boulevard.

The initial phase will is designed for laptop, tablet and iPad users. The service will offer speeds of 1mb download and 500k upload.

Future plans include an expanded coverage area and WiFi for smartphone users.
