LONDON (RNN) - Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge and Prince William introduced the newborn Prince of Cambridge to the world Tuesday.
"Well he's got a good pair of lungs on him that's for sure," William said. "He's a big boy, he's quite heavy. We're still working on a name. So we'll have that as soon as we can. It's the first time we've seen him really. So we're having a proper chance to catch up."
The couple came out and greeted media members outside St. Mary's Hospital at about 7:15 p.m. London time. The royal baby boy, held in his mother's before she handed him off to his father, stayed out for a few minutes and talked to people before heading back inside.
"[It's] very emotional and such a special time," Catherine said. "I think any parent having probably – know what this feeling feels like."
William said the boy had Kate's lips. He also joked he would give his son a hard time about his "tardiness" later on in life.
No due date was officially announced, although it was expected sometime in early to mid-July.
They then returned minutes later with the newborn in a car seat, got in their black Range Rover and rode away with William driving.
Earlier in the day, Prince Charles, his wife Camilla, and Kate Middleton's parents stopped by to visit their grandchild and heir to the throne of England.
Charles told the mass of media members outside they would see the child "in a minute." Palace officials said the couple and their newborn would be leaving the hospital sometime during the day.
People in Great Britain and around the world awaited for the first appearance of the royal family's newest addition all through the day.
Baby boy Cambridge was born at 4:24 p.m. London time Monday, weighing in at 8 pounds, 6 ounces.
Catherine was admitted to the hospital early Monday morning. The child was born in the same wing where his father William was born 31 years earlier.
Prince Charles released a statement saying they were "overjoyed" at the arrival of his first grandchild.
"Grandparenthood is a unique moment in anyone's life, as countless kind people have told me in recent months, so I am enormously proud and happy to be a grandfather for the first time," the statement read.
The baby's birth was announced on Twitter as well as a birth announcement posted on a easel posted in front of Buckingham Palace, where thousands gathered Monday.
A town crier - harkening back to a time before social media - rang a bell and yelled the announcement, ending with "God save the Queen!"
The baby will be third in line to the throne behind his grandfather, Charles, and his dad, William.
The British Prime Minister David Cameron gave a brief statement to the media outside of 10 Downing Street, welcoming Baby Cambridge and saying the moment was an important one for the nation.
President Barack Obama issued a statement congratulating the couple on the "joyous occasion."
"Given the special relationship between us, the American people are pleased to join with the people of the United Kingdom as they celebrate the birth of the young prince," he said.
