The Western Massachusetts Electric Company is warning its customers after several lost large amounts of money to crooks who were claiming to be WMECo employees.
According to WMECo, the scammers are calling and telling customers their electricity will immediately be disconnected unless they purchase a Green Dot pre-paid debit card and follow specific steps to pay. The scammer then walks the customer through the entire payment process.
WMECo said there were around six incidents of the Green Dot Card scam in one day and one victim alone lost $1,000.
"WMECo does not operate this way and we are urging customers to be on alert for this type of scam and we have been in contact with law enforcement officials investigating the case," WMECo Vice President of Customer Operations Bob Coates said. "If any of our customers suspect someone is making a false claim about being a representative of WMECo, they should immediately end the call and notify us at 1-877-OK-WMECO."
According to WMECo, if a customer is scheduled for disconnection due to nonpayment they will receive a written notice that includes the actions they can take to maintain service.
The company said they do not require customers to purchase any type of pre-paid card to pay their bill. WMECo also has several options if you are having trouble making payments.
