TUCSON, AZ (CBS5/AP) -

A Pima County sheriff's deputy is on administrative leave after striking 10-year-old boy with his patrol vehicle. The boy later died of his injuries.

The sheriff's office said Deputy Jesus Verduzco was responding to a call in a marked Chevrolet Tahoe when the boy ran across the street into the car's path about 4:45 p.m. Monday in Tucson.

The Tucson Fire Department said the boy was taken to the University of Arizona Medical Center, where he died.

Tucson Police Sgt. Marie Hawke said witnesses reported the boy was among a group of children who had been running back and forth across a roadway. She said the boy ran into the street as Verduzco approached, and the deputy swerved to avoid him.

Hawke said Verduzco stopped his vehicle after hitting the boy and administered first aid. She said there was no indication that speed was a factor in the collision.

He was placed on administrative leave, standard procedure after an incident of this nature, according to the sheriff's office.

Verduzco has worked for the sheriff's office for five years.
