Crews clean up fuel spill at Gateway Airport in Mesa

Posted: Updated:

A jet fuel spill at Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport forced the evacuation of two businesses while crews cleaned up the mess Monday morning.

The 200-gallon spill happened about 7 a.m. while the fuel was being loaded into a container and it overflowed onto the tarmac, according to Forrest Smith of the Mesa Fire Department.

Smith said the evacuations were precautionary and that no one was injured.

He said fire crews provided protection for the cleanup crews.

Airport operations were not disrupted, Smith said.

The spill took slightly more than two hours to clean up.

No other information was immediately available.
