2-alarm fire causes $1M in damage in east Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

A two-alarm fire caused about $1 million in damage to more than a dozen apartments at a complex in east Las Vegas on Thursday morning.

The fire started about 11:25 a.m. at 5101 E. Twain Ave., near Nellis Boulevard.

Kelly Blackmon, deputy chief of the Clark County Fire Department, said firefighters arrived to find smoke coming from a second-floor balcony. Blackmon said firefighters were able the extinguish the blaze in about 30 minutes after cutting holes in the roof to contain it.

Blackmon said the fire was contained to four apartments, but 15 units received smoke and water damage, displacing about 30 residents.

The cause of the blaze was being investigated.
