NORTHAMPTON, MA (WSHM/AP) -

It was an extra special Independence Day for many in Western Mass who officially became U.S. citizens. Two ceremonies were held in the region on the holiday.

The first was in Northampton where more than 50 people from 28 countries took the oath of citizenship.

"I feel so excited. It's a big day for me," said Lana Adamtsev, who is originally from Russia.

"I wanted to feel part of the American society," said Lily Loh, who was born in Taiwan.

The July Fourth naturalization ceremony is a tradition in the Hampshire County community.

"I was never expecting to be in this position right now, so it's kind of great to finally be a part of America," said Wasim Thomas, who is originally from the Dominican Republic.

"It's really great that I could do it here in Northampton because this town means a lot to me, so it's great," said Fadia Hasan, who is originally from Bangladesh.

About an hour up the road, in Sturbridge, a similar ceremony took place around 1:30 p.m. Thursday.

Around 100 people from 44 countries took part in that event.

"This is one of my dreams to become a citizen," said Donna Paterson, who is originally from Jamaica. "This is one of my 2013 resolutions and it came true, so thank God."

Many said taking the Oath this Independence Day makes an already special holiday more meaningful.

"It means a lot. As you know, this country is a great country and once you get the chance to be a citizen then you are able to be free first of all," said Abdessemed Hamri, who is originally from Morocco.

Across the state almost 8,000 people have or will take the oath to become a citizen from July 1 through July 5.
