Park Service to combat spread of quagga mussels in AZ

Posted: Updated:

The discovery of quagga mussels between Glen Canyon Dam and Lees Ferry have park rangers monitoring the park waters.

Park Ranger Katie Wood said mussel larvae are passing through the Glen Canyon Dam and low numbers of adult mussels have been confirmed in the Glen Canyon stretch of the river.

Utah and Arizona state laws require that boat owners decontaminate their vessels and conveyances to avoid the transport of quagga mussels to uninfested waters.

Boaters and anglers are reminded to clean, drain and dry their boats and equipment after being in Lake Powell or the Colorado River.

Quagga mussels can ruin boat motors and clog water intakes, such as pipes and screens on power and water-treatment plants.
