Firefighters say a home that caught fire on St. Augustine Lane, between Stephanie Street and Arroyo Grande Boulevard in Henderson, may be a total loss.

The fire broke out just after 5 p.m. on Wednesday and started in the home's backyard. The blaze quickly spread to the home's attic, causing the roof to collapse.

"[The house] had a partial roof collapse, so everybody evacuated and we worked the fire from the exterior," said Henderson Fire Chief Steve Goble.

There is no word yet on how the fire started or just how extensive the damage is.

"It appears to be a total loss at this point. It's always tragic when folks have a fire in their home. We do our best to try and minimize the damage. Unfortunately, in this case, the fire was too far advanced to make a big impact," Goble said.

Wednesday's heat made battling the blaze even more difficult.

"You know the heat has a tremendous impact on our folks and their ability to work for long periods of time. We have to shorten our work cycles. We have to send fresh crews in more frequently, and make sure we get them out and rehabilitate them appropriately," said Goble.
