LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

Folks in west Las Vegas near U.S. 95 will have a new summer heat relief option for the future.

The city of Las Vegas held a groundbreaking ceremony Tuesday to celebrate the construction of the new Garside Pool next to Garside Junior High School at Torrey Pines Drive and Elton Avenue.

The city said the new pool will replace the original Garside Pool that was built in 1971.

"I have looked forward to beginning construction on this new pool for Ward 1 residents for such a long time," said Councilwoman Lois Tarkanian, "And now the time has finally arrived. By next summer, there should be a wonderful new pool for families to enjoy, at last."

The pool is located on 1.4 acres of former Clark County School District property that was acquired in a land swap, according to the city. The facility should accommodate about 600 people.

The projected budget for the pool was estimated at $8.1 million from the city's general fund and previous park bonds.

The pool is slated to be complete by next June.
