Swimmer who died at Lake Mead identified

Posted: Updated:

Authorities have identified a swimmer who died at Lake Mead on Sunday afternoon.

Christie Vanover, of the National Park Service, said rangers received calls at about 2 p.m. Sunday about a man who disappeared underwater east of Callville Bay in the Virgin Basin.

The man was swimming in a small cove with friends and began to struggle before disappearing, according to Vanover.

On Monday, crews discovered the body of the man, who was identified by the Clark County Coroner's Office as 30-year-old Curtis Ficarrotta, of Las Vegas.

Vanover said investigators believe alcohol may have contributed to Ficarrotta's death. She said Ficarrotta was not wearing a life jacket.

The cause of death is pending further investigation, according to the coroner's office.
