CARSON CITY, NV (FOX5) -

There was virtually no change in the number of jobless claims between months of May in 2012 and 2013, according to Nevada labor officials.

The Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation reported 16,183 initial unemployment claims were made this past May, which is an eight-tenths of a percent drop from May 2012's total.

Despite the stagnant total, DETR said this was the sixth month in a row that initial claims dropped and the 39th time in the past 42 months that claims have been lower than the year before.

"While December, January, and February all saw claim levels fall by more than 7 percent, the pace of declines has fallen since January and May's decline was less than 1 percent," he said. "This continues the ongoing multiyear trend with claim activity increasingly reflecting a stabilizing job market instead of one dominated by the extreme swings experienced during the worst years of the recession."

Labor officials said the level of claims still remains higher than prior to the recession. Claims averaged below 13,000 per month in a period from 2003 to 2007.

In the last year, claims averaged 17,700 per month, DETR reported.
